Winter KAL: Colorwork and Steeking!

January 11, 2018 @ 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Join Susan at Yarnability this winter for a sweater Knit-a-long to learn colorwork and steeking! This is the BEST time to learn steeking. You will have endless support and Susan’s expert guidance.

Grettir is an Icelandic style sweater with color work in the yoke. The pattern includes sizing and instructions for both men and women. Knit in worsted weight yarn, we’ve chosen made in the USA Shepherd’s Wool, which offers splendid colors and is wonderful to knit and wear. Stop by the shop to check on needle sizes and yarn yardage requirements for each of the four colors  needed for your sweater combination.

The KAL starts with some serious gauge checking by way of swatches as the pattern uses various needle sizes throughout. Then we’ll launch the project by knitting the sleeves, finishing by the end of January. February will have us busy knitting the body of the sweater bottom up so we can join the sleeves at the end of the month and work on the yoke and finishing by March. It’s going to be important that participants can maintain the schedule as much of the heavy lifting is at the end of the KAL: color work, optional steeking with bands, and neckline.

  • Change the pullover to a cardigan, which is accomplished by knitting in the round with extra stitches for cutting up the front. A front band is then applied after. (This is a Yarnability option.)
  • Add color work detail above bottom and sleeve bands. (This is a Yarnability option.)
  • Pick a neck variation that best suits you. These are available in the pattern.
